CREATIVE
INTELLIGENCE
LAB

Creative Intelligence Lab is the first art and science lab integrated into a European supercomputing center. For more than thirteen years, we have been exploring artistic practice as a fundamental tool for scientific research. We are a multidisciplinary team that brings together research, creativity, and technology, collaborating with artists, cultural institutions, and industry to generate knowledge that would not otherwise be possible.

STUDIO

We work in three interconnected stages that form a continuous cycle. Arts develops residencies and collaborations that integrate creative individuals into research teams. Studio translates that research into tools, visualizations, and platforms. Solutions connects the results with industry and society through tangible products and services.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center

We are part of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), a leading institution in supercomputing in Spain and an international leader in Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Computing. The BSC coordinates the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) and hosts MareNostrum 5 and the country’s first quantum computers: the cutting-edge infrastructure on which the Lab operates.

Quantum Compass is an interactive installation featuring the first font based on quantum physics, capable of representing opposite concepts simultaneously. As a metaphor for post-truth and the construction of meaning, it includes infographics on the principles that inspired it, a documentary on the foundations of quantum computing, and an interactive computer to explore its components.

Expanded Voices explores AI-powered voice synthesis and its impact on identity. In collaboration with artist Maria Arnal, the project visualizes the latent spaces of an AI-based timbre transfer model to reveal how voices can be understood, transformed, and reimagined, with applications in music production, live performances, industry, and healthcare.

Relish is a European project that brings together universities, supercomputing centres, and culinary culture experts to investigate recipes as drivers of cultural and environmental change. It applies NLP techniques to map the evolution of culinary practices and develops interactive visualisations to recreate historical recipes using modern methods.

Our network of collaborations brings together artists, the cultural and creative industries, scientific institutions, and organizations from different sectors and geographies. Through our residency programme and joint projects, external contributors work alongside our team as part of the research process. This is how we build lasting relationships that extend the Lab’s reach beyond BSC.

INTERIOR:
LANDSCAPE OF A SUPERCOMPUTER IN MOTION

As part of the EXASCALE program, we are launching our first call for applications for a research residency. INTERIOR: Landscape of a supercomputer in motion invites an individual or collective based in Catalonia to work alongside our team and other groups at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center to develop new methods of representation and visual metaphors that explain supercomputing and the activity of a fully operational supercomputer to the general public. The resulting project will be displayed in the public access area of MareNostrum 5, one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.
